I developed recurrent lower back, neck and shoulder pain in my early twenties

Over many years I had regular treatment from a cranial osteopath. This helped me live my life and continue working, but I had no insight into the underlying cause of the pain or a long-term way of managing it   

After a particularly painful back episode in my thirties I took up Pilates.  This too enabled me to cope but I still had no understanding of why I had back problems or how I could approach life differently. My children grew up and I gradually took on the care of an elderly parent as well as working.  I was becoming more twisted and compressed and less mobile. I felt sure I was headed for pain, stiffness and immobility as I grew older but didn’t know what to do about it.   

In 2009 I went to an introductory Alexander Technique group class at a local college.  I realised my own body use – how I moved and went about my everyday activities – was at the heart of the problem. By using the Alexander Technique to change my habitual movements I realised I could find a way out of increasing discomfort. I went on to have one-to-one lessons and eventually trained as an Alexander teacher.   

I’ve become more mobile and am no longer in pain. I’ve taken up cycling again after many years. I’ve re-discovered my natural balance and poise and now prioritise my own well-being.  I’m more optimistic about moving into later life and can also deal more calmly with whatever life stresses come along.   


In 2019 I completed a three-year full-time training course to become an Alexander Technique teacher.  This is accredited by the Society of Alexander Technique Teachers (STAT).  I am fully insured and am a teaching member of the Society and bound by their Code of Professional Conduct and Professional Competence.  I am registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC).
